What triggers the low oil light? I have an 01 5.4l that was 3 quarts low and the low oil light never came on. It illuminates when I turn the key to the on position and the gauge works. My explorer low oil light comes on when it's 1 quart low. Thanks

 

That is not the low oil light. It is the low oil pressure light. I would think 3 quarts low would drop pressure. Miine is 97 scab 4.6l 4x4 and have been two quarts low and still good pressure. I installed a mechanical oil pressure. But no light. I have more leaks than a bad off brand 2 day old diaper.

 

So the light just tells me if the oil pressure drops, not if the oil level drops?
