Hey all, I've been looking at some LED Headlight options for my 2001, and I've got a question. Is the MKV Cree Kit from f150leds.com a good kit? I'm looking for a light kit that doesn't require any wire splicing or modifications. If it's not good, what suggestions would you guys give? I'm about to start working graveyard shift, and I need something better than my faded halogens
Your going to get responses from both the yay and nay camp regarding LEDs in halogen housings. Here's my two centavos.
LEDs have advanced over the years. There are units now that create nice bright white light and have very good cutoff in halogen housings when installed correctly.
That having been said, I don't recommend LED bulbs in those housings. If you still have the fluted housings on your truck, the LEDs will create too much glare for other drivers. Especially bulbs from that website. Their motto with their products seems to be LED bulbs with lots of emitters on them for the sake of creating tons of light other drivers be damned.
If you have decent quality reflector headlights with "euro" clear lenses, grabbing a decent set of bulbs will work well and won't create as much glare as the fluted lenses of the original housings.
I am using S.V-4 bulbs which have very nice cutoff, obs not projector sharp cutoff but I don't get flashed.
New clear housings and new bulbs will probably do wonders for you. Halogen bulbs get dim with time.
That said all vehicles headlights are tested and approved for a vehicle and conform to DOT standards. You actually cannot get much more light, legally, with a different bulb for your truck... They just changed the color of the light and it looks like you got more because the light is whiter, but you basically have the same max lumens within a bulb with the same style number. The only one that is DOT approved for your vehicle. . The ones that put out a little closer to the maximum have shorter life than ones that put out lower that's the way that works.
Non dot approved light changes are the wild wild West. But here's the thing that opens you up to liability. Personally. Should you be cause an accident with them.... your insurance doesn't have to cover you if you did not disclose such a change. The Chinese vendor doesn't care or have your best interests
I put Auxito's in mine. They gave them to me to do a review. They're definitely brighter. I've done my best to align them properly. I do not get flashed, so I assume I've done well.
When I purchased my "new to me" 2001 screw cab 4x4 Lariat, all I did was replace the bulbs and gave the lens a good work over and cleaned them up. Made a ton of difference.
Will it last, probably not, at that time I will then get the wet sand paper out and give-em another go, so far it's been almost a year. Way cheaper than new housings.

Not condoning but this is highly doubtful and I don’t think there’s ever been a case let alone post about something like this.
