Default Jacking Questions

Guys, I am trying to figure out a better way.... When jacking your truck to work on it, what type of floor jack do you use? What do you block up the jack with to even approach the frame rails? I've been using cut pieces of boards, is there a better way? I have been looking for a jack that could raise my F150 (or boat, or?) without having to steady some 2x4's, etc. Any suggestions on floor jacks or anything else that might work better than a stack of boards?

I used to use a little box I built out of scrap wood. Then when the jack I was using finally failed I just bought the jack that would raise the highest at Autozone.

I use a 3 ton floor jack. That's it. All you would need. No wood or anything unless I want it higher.

I usually jack the axle up, not the frame rail. You need a really tall jack if you want to jack up the frame unless your truck is pretty low.

For doing springs and what not I use 4 cinder blocks and 4 block caps and set the jack on them and lift at the trailer hitch

The cinder block idea has promise. I usually put a couple of cut 2x4's on the jack, but do not like doing such. I've also put some 2x4's under the jack to raise the bottom point but again, a pain.
I was also jacking up my boat/trailer recently and out in the yard it is a terrible pain to get boards, etc in the right place to get a good jack point. Oh well, been doing it this way for many years, I'll keep doing it.

I found a 3.5 ton jack at auto zone (was kinda in a bind and didn't have a choice but to buy one from them) it came with a lift out jack pad (the part that makes contact with the vehicle) and had 2 extensions with it to put under the jack pad. One was 3" the other 5". I've had it a couple years now and it does surprisingly good. It'll reach the frame in the front on my 02 and a couple 4x4's under it and it'll reach the frame on the back. I think I gave 59 bucks for it.
