I cheaped out on the idler arm on mine. BIG MISTAKE! It lasted less than a year. Then I bought the best A/M one I could find-ya I wanted grease fittings too. So far so good but I grease it about once a month. You get what you pay for. There's nothing debateable about this. NO play is acceptable for proper handling and toe angles (tire wear)

I would say its probably about a quarter inch of movement with the truck on the ground. Might be a little less but I didnt think it was supposed to move

I just went with the best Moog. Like $110-$120 or something. Only had it for 2 weeks, so we'll see.

Would the idler arm cause a popping noise?

My truck seems to eat Idler Arms. I have gone through 3 of them in the last 5 years. I replaced them each time with the OE part until the last one which is Moog. I'm hoping for a better result this time.

I was going through idler arms every two months when I was running an IFS setup with the rough country 5", 3" body and 39s... It seems to me the Motorcraft idler is the best/longest lasting because it spreads the force out and the longer body that's captivated on the anchor keeps it from moving as much and prematurely wearing out...
