How many miles does your 1997-2003 have on it?

Nah, perhaps in other cases. The 5/20 change straight up has it's advantages by itself. With higher miles it has even more benefit. That's why the spec change was retro active back to the 97 model years.

I run 5-30 in summer since its a thicker weight and the motor will be warmer when it's 90 but in the winter I run 5-20 since its thinner and a little easier for the motor to churn when it's 10 degrees out if that makes sense. Ether or will work it doesn't matter. As long as your not running super thick or super thin I think you'll be alright altho my uncle runs 0w-20 ams oil in his 5.4. I think the main thing is that the sob has oil lol

5W-30 means the oil will flow like a 5 weight oil when cold, and a 30 weight oil when hot. Higher viscosity oil does not give you more protection, in today's precision engines with small oil passages a higher viscosity oil might not flow as well as the oil the car was designed for. Go with what the engine manufacturer recommends.
Ford changed to 5W-20 because it flows better hot with less friction. That ='s better lubrication, mileage and more life in the end.

I definitely don't want that to happen lol. But I'm pretty sure that's what it is because I think it's also making a noise when when braking hard. I've never replaced u joints before but they seem fairly easy to do.

Don't fight with them yourself. $20 for a pair of u joints. Pull the driveshaft, take it to a parts store, $25 to press the old out and the new in
