Are you sure it's not just the fuel injectors ticking? I've also read that the the 5.4 is a little noisy. Mine has 149,xxx on it now and it has a little knocking when cold but it's been the same since it had 80,xxx on it when I got it. It has not gotten worse.

Yea they do suck considering that I have 240,000 miles on a 4.9L and the only thing that went was the water pump, and I have a friend with the same engine that has 476,000 miles on it and still runs good. But yea they do suck.:glare:

zachlow 10-03-2007 06:23 PM

1997 4.6 with 169,000. Replaced gas tank, upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, rear u-joint, driver wheel bearing, and alternator. Has knock coming from #8 cylinder(back driver if im mistaken). All this since 140,000 miles, now rear main seal leaks. Its had a rough life, both on the road, and used as farm truck. Hoping to make it last another year and hit 200K, then moving up to 7.3 powerstroke hopefully after college gets done.

I think he's referring to the 4.2L and not the 4.9L. The 4.9L is an awesome engine, ford should never have switced to a V6.
I've had 2 4.9L trucks that were stone reliable, and that engine has plenty of torque.

I have a 97 f250 LD 4X4 with 185,000 miles. in the past year I have replaced both front 4X4 CV axels and get about 12 mpg. Also inthe last month I have had some electrical problems the wipers, dome lights, power windows go out and come back I can't find the problem, maybe someone out knows how to fix it if they do I would like to know the fix and it's not the ground. Other than that I love it.

I have a 1998 4x4 x cab, it has rolled past the 270,000 mile mark. bought from father in law a year ago and had 261,000. He has written in books an time anything was done including fueling, bulbs...everything.
truck has original brakes on rear, on second set of front brakes though.
had rear diff rebuilt at about 202 k. engine uses just about 1 to 1 1/4 of oil in a three k oil change.

I dont remember really it was over 200,000 for the wheels bearings the starter i had rebuilt just because i thought it was bad and it wasn't so i had it rebuilt anyways it turned out to be the a/c compressor bearings seized up and locked up the motor it took me awhile to figure it out until i took off the belt and turned over the motor just wait until you have to buy wheel bearings they are not CHEAP i paid about $400.00 for each

I Used one for pumping oil around midland texas, at 50K front hubs went, at 65K transmission was gone, and 70k the bed cracked at the tool box. all under the 100k mile warranty, keep in mind, it was driven hard and run all day through mud, and deep ruts. Ford has been GREAT! always fixed in a timely manner. The truck is equipped with a 50 gallon fuel cell in the bed, a 25 gallon varsol tank with sprayer, a RKI toolbox with oil Centerfuge that weighs at least 125#, large side tool boxes. (basically 1300# of weight). 120K miles and running GREAT! I cant belive this truck is so TOUGH!
