Remove all the items with screws showing (sun visors, roof light, coat hooks, etc) from the inside roof. Carefully pop out the right and left plastic side trim pieces, then do the back trim pieces. They are held in with metal clips. I did not have to remove them all, the headliner will slide out if you do it right. Check the material, if it is pulling away from the foam, fine. If the foam is eaten away, not so fine. If the foam is good, carefully peel off the fabric. If the foam is bad, you will have to remove all the old foam with a stiff brush. You will need to replace the old removed foam with thin foam from a fabrics place. You attach the foam the same as the fabric, with an adhesive spray.
Use spray trim adhesive from the auto parts place and spray the headliner cardboard or foam and let it dry (about 10 minutes). Spray the new material on the back all over. You may be able to reuse the original but I matched it up at a fabrics place so it was new and I cut to fit. Old material kind of rots and will probably tear when you try to remove it. The adhesive is contact cement so you only get one chance to stick the fabric to the cardboard part so be careful. Gently rub the material to make sure it sticks everywhere then re-install.
The whole thing only took me 45 minutes and it looks like a brand new truck.

Actually the fabric stores heave the foam already on the material, heres mine I redid it black. Just ask for headliner material. (they'll know) It was like $13 a yd.

But just like was said, go get some 3M adhesive spray (works better than the orange Headliner can) at Oreillys or autozone.

The instructions are on the can.

I remember back in the day my brother had a '96 Powerstroke and it didnt have a headliner. Just bare metal but it was painted the same color as the truck. It was kinda neat because he had a flashlight holder that held on by a magnet and some other magnet stuff.

Does anyone know if our "ceilings" are painted to match? I would think not but i really have no idea.

Well I replaced my headliner today (I blame this thread).

Took about 2 hours. Part of the delay was that I had to remove the passenger side seatbelt in order to get the headline board out. My truck is a 97 Lariat just for background info. Just needed a Torx 50 bit and a ratchet to get it out. Took a minute and no real effort there.

I won't waste time with a pic because it looks exactly like Harley's pic 2 or 3 posts up. My headline board was made of what looks like fiberglass material. Lucky for me, the foam underneath was in good condition.

The "Universal Replacement Liner" from Pepboys cost 50 bucks and the can of adhesive about 10. You can buy the replacement on ebay for 39, but 10 bucks shipping.....

If you're going to paint any of the side molding piece that you're probably going to take off to get to the headliner, now is the time to do it.

Make X cuts with an Xacto knife from the reverse side where holes will be and you're all set. Putting everything back in took much less time.

My ceiling no longer looks like Weapon X had a hissy fit.

I don't know about all the years, but I've had 77,78,79 & 98 F-150s and they have all had painted roofs under the head liner. If you want to know about yours just take it down. They are easy to take down & put back up if you want to.

Lol I wonder if he really needs the answer to his question 5 years later. Haha

And to answer it, yes it's painted under the headliner.

Nice search skills, and first post. Welcome

My 98 4x4 F150 Lariat Screw made in Canada does not have the painted roof.
