Gas tank has crud at the bottom of it don't ask me what but its there. Whenever gas level gets below half a tank it starts sucking it up. Changed the fuel filter already and black gritty gas poured outa it . Anyways how do I go about dropping the tank and what do I use to clean it?

Drop the tank, remove the fuel pump and try to scoop as much of the crud out as you can. Or, try a scrap yard and get a different tank.

You have two options on how to get access to the tank. 1) remove the two straps holding the tank on place. Use a floor jack or two to slowly bring it down. 2) remove the truck bed. This gives you a straight shot at the top of the tank. We do this at my shop to replace fuel pumps. This way really cuts down on the labor time. You will need a couple extra guys to help take the bed off and put it back on.

Taking the bed off ia a major pain though. When I did my body lift we had to take the bed off and the bed bolts were rusted in there real good. I'd suggest dropping it, that way you dont have to either grind/torch the bolts off and replace them.

I bought a 99 Ford Explorer that had sat for 2+ years with half a tank of fuel...I dropped it [the tank] when I could not get the pump to work...The tank inside was rusty as hell and the fuel looked like molasses... I cleaned it out with chemicals in my pressure washer and then coated it with Eastwoods gas tank coating...It did not last more than 3 months...

I was constantly removing the fuel filter thanks to the rust buildup inside and finally got tired of it...

Pulled it and took it to a radiator shop who recommended a jy tank...Then brought the jy tank to them for cleanout and coating...3 months later the same thing again...

After wasting about $300 I bought a new tank for the truck for $100 back in 2010 and never looked back...Metal tanks rust thanks in a large part to the ethanol in our fuel and the air inside the tank... If you drop it to clean it replace it...You will not have to keep changing fuel filters if you do this because you also cannot get all the rust and dirt out and you cannot stop the tank from rusting inside once it starts...
