Default Help!

This started happening a few days ago a clicking noise coming from the engine bay. At first it was soft you could hardly hear it, now it has just gotten louder. I thought it was coming from the driver side being that I could hear it more while driving next to a pillar but now when passing other vehicles I can hear it on both sides.

Put your head under the hood and find where it's coming from.

Spark plug or exhaust manifold.

Tried that but the sound only comes when I'm driving over 50mph and just gets louder.

Well, I could list every part in your vehicle that is moving at 50mph but I haven't the time.

You're on your own. Sorry. We can't diagnose a noise through a computer that only happens at 50 mph.

If it's speed-dependent it sounds suspension related. Can you feel it in the steering wheel or through the chassis?

The last time I had a speed-dependent ticking (in my case tapping) noise that got more and more intense, lugs bolts were loose and a wheel almost came off on the highway. If I hadn't had to do a brake pad replacement that evening I never would've caught it. Scary.

Just on one wheel. I drove about 50 miles that day to a few buddies' houses. It started as a faint *tap tap tap* but by the end of the day it was a *BANG BANG BANG* coming from the wheel well. You'd have thought I would've pulled over and checked to see what was obviously wrong but, well, the car ('85 RX-7) had a variety of problems anyway, and I was young and stupid.

Live (fortunately) and learn.
