Three step procedure:
1. remove entire dash
2. replace heater core
3. reinstall entire dash

I did mine in one step... drove it down to a new auto shop that had just opened by my house, noticed his mechanics sitting around and not much business so they were able to change it out in about 6 hours for $300.

Every person I've talked to would rather wrestle alligators naked in a bathtub than change a heater core. It's an incredible amount of labor and frustration if you're not sure of what you're doing and a lot to possibly screw up. I do almost all the work on my truck and I need a new heater core as well and I'm not going to do it. If you can be as lucky as texan to find a place that will do it for that cheap, pounce on it. Otherwise, swallow the pill and pay a mechanic.
