I have the pacesetter headers and y-pipe also, and on advice from some gentlemen here I've yet to install it because of the issue you brought to light.
However if you bottlenecked the exhaust by running 2.5" diameter pipe from the end of the y-pipe all the way back would that solve the torque generation issue or is it the y-pipe/headers that is causing the issue?
Generating more power naturally aspirated is always going to be a give and take. Is there a compatible y-pipe with a smaller diameter that would be better?
I'm glad someone posted this because it helps quite a bit of us out.

Where's the bottle neck ? What are you referring too ? The way you run NA is simple with the factory tune.
With LT's, you run a 2.5 mandrel Y and 2.5 out..simple.
W/O headers (well, shorties or factory manifolds) you run a 2.5 Y then 3 out.
Always run it thru a strait thru muffler design.
Just erase the 3" Y from your mind lol. Hell even the lightnings don't have a use for one IMO (That factory set-ups anyway). Sure, you could tune it to run one, but why ? Do you drive your truck wide open every where you go?
If all you guys want is some kind of noise maker, just chop crap off like that other guy did. Keep in mind, they sound even better when set up for performance. Performance should be the #1 concern. The more of that , the better they sound.
haha i think they all have positives and negatives. I have the cheap set of pacesetters on right now and they missed about 100 different welds. Looks like a 9th grader tried to weld the primaries to the flange. Paint did fall off after about 2 hours, all bolts were mild steel and have rusted, fitment was off a tad bit.
Nothing to say about OBX never owned them
Boy were ever blessed, I've yet to hear of or see a set Pace setters in that condition. Obviously defective, I would of thru them back. Excellent welds on the sets I've seen and handled. They line up is perfect, IF the trans mount is okay... or in good shape. You have to check the Y/hanger plate above the T-mount as well, they can crack once the bushing material deteriorates.

I got ya man that wasn't the question. (It was more along the lines of the theoretical. As in if you've got a 3" tube that tapers to 2" it can only flow as much as the smaller diameter section).
Regardless the point you made is correct and I'm not going to use the 3"
Does pacesetter make a 2.5" y-pipe that will fit? Or does this mean I have to get it fabricated?
Also sorry for hijacking thread. At least we're keeping it pertinent.
If you look at Pacesetters and OBX side by side. It looks as tho a Gorrila grabeed a set of OBX's and streched them out for better flow, then called them Pacesetters.
Just a little observation.
Might explain obd's bad set. Too much fiber in the gorillas diet that day.

Mainly terrible welds and quality all together. It was the cheaper set. The welds inside the flanges were sticking out and would have etched my heads if I didn't grind them down.

Yea, I never heard of such a set being offered. Mine were cheap in price, - 279 back then if I recall.
Was it a knock-off ?
EDIT: - My first Magnaflow muffler (race series) was sort of a knock-off. Bought from eBay, real good deal, but they forgot a weld and it leaked. I b itched, that's when a met Troyer way back when lol.

Good question. Best answer, = yes and no. I didn't go that route, but I believe one was offered. Think I have a pick of it as a matter of fact..yea think this is it, -
Yea, Pacesetter hadn't offered that yet when I was building mine. That came after. I'm not sure if they still do. The pic came from another user who got one and chopped it up to fit his configuration.
Personally, I did a mock-up, then took my old Y in to have it made. This was the pic of the mock-up, -

I wish I had your garage. I barely have enough room for my big *** to get out without scratching up my doors.
I'm going to take everything I have (headers/y-pipe) to a performance shop nearby and see what they can do with it. I'll see if they can make a custom version (albeit smaller ID) of the y-pipe. I'll try to get before/after dyno and I'll share them in order to add some more data to this.

That would be great Mike. I'd really like to see those numbers
Like I said, I have comparison vids you can time with your computer clock or a stop watch. But yea, no dyno.
A performance or speed shop, if they have a few good guys plus the right stuff , it could be one stop shop. There's one or two close to me, Livernoise and one in Jackson. There was one called "Ramchargers", but they didn't last. They were nicknamed "Overchargers" and that killed them right there.
BTW- When that *** gets too big for that garage, you have to thin that wallet out and kill two birds. Know what I'm sayin Mike ? Those are Grampa's words right there.
