The relay that turns the lights on is powered by the interior light so anything that activates the interior light turns on the ground light, door open, key chain unlock button, or the dash switch.

I was thinking of getting a led strip and sticking it to the bottom of the truck. It wont be a bright at his lights but it would give me enough to see the ground.

Where did you mount them into the relay? I want to do this how you have, but I only know the basics when it comes to wiring. Never played with any relays.
