Default Grill

I was reading about cheap easy mods and someone had painted their grill. Only the finished product was shown and it looked better than mine does now. I was wondering if you can remove just the honeycomb part or do you have to paint it with it still in the truck?

You can leave it on and tape off around it.
Or you can take the surround off and paint it that way. You can't take the honeycomb out without removing the grill surround. If you remove the honeycomb from the surround you're likely to break at least a clip or two.

Personally I left mine on when I painted it, it was quicker and easier.

Thanks for the info Tackle, I kinda thought it would end up that way. I got plenty of tape from house projects. Would you use gloss or flat paint?

I did the same thing with mine, though I used one out of an Expy. I used a can of ACE satin black paint, and it did the job very nicely. Couple of pics with the grill out and on the truck.

And yeah, it is possible you'll break the clips, but just be careful, and you'll be fine. I took mine out pretty easily and didn't break a single clip.

That's up to you. I used krylon black, don't remember if it was glossy or not. I put a clear coat over it. Held up fine until i replaced that grill.

My ads owns a painting company's I used his masker and I would rip a strip of paper off and slip it in between the grill an the trim around the grill then tape it down. Pull off the ford emblem and degrease and clean the **** outta the grill then sand it with 220 grit or maybe a little higher then a light coat of primer then if u want lightly sand it and spray a few solid coats of paint! I used satin and no clear. Looks great, u don't need a glossy coat

Satin is the perfect choice. I used it just lije you, though I only washed it off with a soapy rag and water. It worked fine for me.

Yea that will be just fine, it's just I'm a painter and I prefer to do thorough prep work! But Ray paint sticks well? Looks much better though right..

I just did this on my truck and it came out great IMO. Looks 100 times better than the faded grey. I followed instructions that I got off some other forum from a link on here. I took off the grille surround and poped out the honeycomb part. Just take your time and you shouldn't break any clips. The trick is to start at one side and work your way across doing both the top and bottom. I used Duplicolor Trim paint (green can) and Duplicolor adhesion promotor.
