Default GEM questions

Haven't tested all components of 4x4 yet but I know the problem is electrical. If I were to go find parts vehicles to pull a GEM module from(or any other component I might need) which vehicles will work? Are 2wd and 4wd modules the same? Can I pull from an explorer or expedition?

Get one from a truck with the same options as yours.

If you know how to use a soldering iron, why not repair the gem you have, thats what i did. Its not too difficult.

Wasn't sure if that could be done. Could you elaborate more?

Okay, first what electrical functions are malfunctioning, power windows for example. The more items malfunctioning means more of the gem board is damaged.

Most of the time the damage is located in the bottom most portion of the gem, this is from a leaking windshield. Water travels down the "A" piller and in to the gem, normally power windows are the first to go out due to the fact that they are powered through a trace that runs along the bottom.

So remove the computer, take the casing off, clean the board with isopropyl alcohol, inspect both sides for damage, then repair the burnt traces. Search youtube/google to learn how to repair traces it will do a better job then me at explaining repair.

I would suggest finding exactly what part of the 4x4 system isn't functioning if the only problem you are having is the 4x4. I would suspect other problems if your GEM is bad. It's pretty easy to track down. It may not be the GEM.

Is the front dif fork actuator moving?
Is the transfer case shift motor getting voltage?

If I turn the switch nothing happens. I can't hear any relays clicking, can't hear the shift motor trying to engage.

Could be a bad switch then. I have a malfunctioning GEM currently. Its not telling the shift motor to move. Verify you have voltage at the switch. Are your turn signals working?

I haven't had time to take apart things and test for power. The only thing that does not function on my truck is the esof 4x4. Everything else is good
