You lifted your body up in the air. You will never get decent mileage again. 3.73 is a decent axle to try. But not for fuel mileage, just drive ability. Your too high in the air to get good MPG now. Hope for being able to enjoy 5th gear again. Save the rest of your money for the $300 a month needed for gas.

So you're lugging the engine with the long gearing, which is a very inefficient way to burn gas. Let's see, driveshaft angle increases resistance in the u-joints, and those tires must have huge rolling resistance. I think Tiger may have the answer.

31? Are these Imperial gallons? How strong was that tailwind? Were you drafting a semi? Enquiring minds want to know.

Tiger I had a buddy with a Toyota that had 37s and the 22re but the truck could fit 54s it looked rediculous but he still got 24 mpg with 5.29 gears

my 98 with the same drivetrain as yours has 3.55 gears in it. I run the factory 275/60/17 tires. Before I got my snow tires all I did was spin, even on dry pavement. I know your tires are larger and you have more wind resistance than I do but it's a thought. My 95 bronco with a 5.0 had the same gears with 31's and the pig heavy E40D in it. I averaged 10-12. No Issues. my 98 gets 17-20.
