Default Gas vs Propane

Now i know we all are getting a little tired of talking about gas prices... seems to the topic that comes up atleast one time a night when im with my friends... gas is declining rapidly... i just saw 2.01 a gal for regular here in south jersey.

i was watching the tv show trucks this morning and they brought up gas prices and they took an 08 f150 and switched it from gas to LP (liquid propane) has anyone done this? whats the gas mileage like. and does the cost of the kit and tank to actually do it make it cost effective?

i bought some Propane for my outdoor grill and it cost me like 17 bucks to fill that...so its like... is it worth it?

A BBQ grill propane tank is typically a 20lb cylinder, which will hold about 4.5 gallons when properly filled. So, $17 divided by 4.5 is around $3.75 per gallon.

When propane is used as a motor fuel, it will have an additional tax - have to check your local regulations - in some areas it's a per-gallon tax, in others it may be an annual sticker based on expected consumption.

Propane is typically not as readily-available as gasoline and also does not have the heat energy per gallon - meaning that miles-per-gallon should be less.

Suggest that a conversion would be worth considering if gasoline supply is restricted or if the price of gasoline far exceeds the price of propane. Be sure to consider the conversion costs into your operating costs. It will take a very long time to make up a $500 or $1000 installation cost.

So you are telling me that gas is roughly 3 dollars a gallon in Canada?

Well, it depends on whose dollars you're talking about.

Here in Quebec, gas is selling for CAD$1.09 per liter, down significantly from CAD$1.39 from July.
The latest exchange rate I could find was US$1.00 = CAD$1.18

So, (CAD$1.09 per liter) times (3.8 liters per US gallon) times (US$1 per CAD$1.18) comes out to about CAD$4.14 or US$3.51 per US gallon.

Took some getting used to the dollar and two-dollar coins up here - have to be careful when tossing out tip money - could be some serious change. Ah, but change is good :-)~

Default Propane conversion

My advice is DON'T DO IT!! In 1983 I bought a new 83 F150, 300 c.i., 6-cyl. with 3-on-the-tree, brand new. I can't remember how much gasoline was a gallon then, ($.65to $.75/ gal.?) but I read about a LPG conversion and it sounded interesting. I talked to my LPG supplier (I had a 250 gal. tank for propane heat at my house) At the time (1983) the conversion cost for the equipment and installation was $250.00 and propane was $.50/ gal (road tax not included) I was told that my mileage would drop slightly but I put the pencil to it and went ahead and had it installed. I also had a hose and valve installed on my home tank so I could fill my truck's tank at home. I had terrible fuel mileage, it dropped from 16-17 to 11-12 with a loss of power when on propane. (my set up allowed me to switch from gasoline to propane and back by turning a lever) I took it to the dealer twice, they put it on a dyno and adjusted the "richness" way down to increase fuel economy on propane. The truck wouldn't get out of it's own way. It was terrible. I commuted 36 miles each way to work on mostly state highways at about 55 mph, I had to start out on gasoline and get to 55 mph then switch to propane. The dealer couldn't improve it. Then at the end of the year I get a tax form from the State of Texas to show all my mileage (including the miles driven on propane purchased at a gas filling station propane and gasoline) and pay so much a mile tax on every mile driven that year. 2 months ago I filled my home propane tank and it cost $2.40/ gal. (Aug., 2008) It was $.50/ gal in 1983 plus road tax. The dealer finally said he couldn't improve it and gave me a $200.00 refund ($50.00 was for installation of the tank and equipment) and I was so glad to get shy of my propane system. You don't hardly ever see a truck or tractor running on propane anymore, it's too expensive
