Default Fuel sending unit

I have a 2000 4x4. The gauge is reading E and I'm thinking sending unit. I am wondering if anyone has ever pulled the fuel pump/sending unit and repaired it instead of replacing? Is it a situation of cleaning? I'm cheap I guess.

The sending unit has little finger you could call them and that's what reads the level of fuel after a while the fingers wear off

Thanks - not much you can do except replace it. I guess if it is the unit it appears my truck is giving me the finger? Sorry couldn't pass that up.

Can the sending unit be purchased separately or do you have to go with the whole pump assembly?
Thanks
