Default Fuel Pump?

I have an 01 supercrew with the 5.4. Sometimes when my gas gets around a quarter tank i go to press the gas pedal and nothing will happen like it is stalled but then it will start to go again without ever turning the motor back over. Anybody know what it might be? Most of the time it runs good

I would start with changing your fuel filter. That is pretty easy and its something that a lot of people never do. If that doesn't help, you should get a video of it happening so that we can see/hear what is happening.

I just did my fuel pump and the symptom was a little different. My truck (01 5.4 also) wouldn't want to start. Id hit the tank in the middle by the pump and it would start. I had the same problem ten years ago with my Ex.

I changed the fuel filter a few days ago, I also dropped the fuel tank and noticed a few vent hoses were disconnected. I hooked everything back up and thought i had fixed it, but the problem came back. I guess i will try a new fuel pump

Alright, you should also check out your injectors. They may need to be cleaned or replaced. Or maybe the fuel rail. I'm just spitting ideas out there. I hope you get it figured out.

After I replaced my fuel pump and filter I was experiencing something similar. The problem was with the computer. My computer had a little corrosion (greenish color) on three prongs out of maybe fifty. I cleaned it with a tiny file and q-tip and my problem was solved. I had a slight hesitation at take off and not always just sometimes. My truck would not shut off just felt like it would for a second. Check it. That fix would be free lol.
good luck

Well , im still having the same problem. the truck runs good on the ride to work, but on the ride home it starts surging. When i put it in park the idle jumps from about 500 and 1000 rpms repeatedly. Im thinking about replacing the pump and sending unit but dont want to start wasting money

Have you tried cleaning your MAF sensor? Do you happen to have a K&N or another oiled filter in it?

I thought it was fuel sending unit because i ran out of gas with a quarter tank, so i thought i would keep it full till i bought the part. Then it started happening with a full tank. It only happens sometimes, i put in park while it was happening and the rpms were jumping from 500-1000. Ive cleaned the maf, iac, and fixed the pcv leak. Im taking it to my friend shop fri I will keep yall updated

With all the miles on your truck, I would check the EGR valve. With the engine running, you can feel at the valve by the diaphragm and it should move when you give it a little gas. You can take it off and clean it with a screw driver or similar tool to knock off the carbon build up inside the valve. Also, run a wire through the tube that runs from your manifold to the EGR to make sure it is not plugged with carbon. If you clean the EGR with a solvent, DON'T GET THE SOLVENT ON THE DIAPHRAGM because it will trash it and you will have to replace the hole EGR.

Before you conclude that the fuel pump is bad, put a pressure gauge on the line. You should have pressure at idle of between 30-45 psi. You can get a pressure gauge free loaner at Autozone. Also, if you are thinking it is a bad fuel pump, run it low on gas to save you from having to off load a full tank of gas to drop the tank. Makes the job a lot easier.
