Default Fuel Pump

I have a 2003 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4L. It has 185,000 miles on it. Today it bucked afew times then stalled as I was crusing aprox 50 mph. It would then sputter for a few seconds when I tried to start it. I notice I do not hear the fuel pump when I turn on the key. I checked the fuel pump fuse and it is OK. Should I go buy a new pump or is there something else I can try first? Can the pump be replaced without dropping the tank?

Don't know what else you can try but you can either drop the tank or remove the bed, those are your two choices for removing the fuel pump. I would recommend dropping the tank, ain't too hard

Well a water hose would work, or you could get a siphon or even an electric siphon

Have you actually checked fuel pressure? First things first. Verify the problem. If no fuel pressure, test the circuit with a test light-at the pump connection.

You will not be able to siphon the fuel out. the filer neck has a anti-siphon valve in the bottom. Dropping the tank is easy if you have a larg floor jack.

How do you test the fuel pressure when the fuel pump is not running?

With 185k you propably need a pump if not now very soon. if you have a full tank I have found its a lot easyer to unbolt the bed and just get a freind and slide it back a couple of feet you can then change the pump with a fuul tank and not risk spilling fuel or damage to the mount straps, bolts or fuel lines plus you can start it and test it before you replace the bed

If you don't have a F/P guage you can have someone crank the engine while you depress the shrader valve on the fuel rail. Fuel should spray out several feet. Not the safest way but it'll work-just be careful incase there is pressure present. If not-check for power and gnd at the f/p connector during crank.

Well today the truck started right up, you can here the pump where you couldn't when it wouldn't start. It was about 100 degrees yesterday, could it be that the heat caused the problem and now that it is cooled off it works. I don't trust that this will not happen again. Should I just replace the pump anyways?
