Default fuel problem

Ok a coworker of mine has an 2000 f150 with the 4.6, and when his gas gets below half a tank it runs fine. Anything more than that, when he presses the gas it acts like hesitates. He had the fuel filter changed and that didn't help, but like I said it runs fine and doesn't do it below half-quarter of a tank. A garage wants to change the fuel pump and regulator, but they didn't hook anything up to the fuel system to check the pressure. Any ideas?

They are probably correct but I would like to see them look into it a bit more than just a guess haha

I hope it's an educated guess at least

well..... lets just say this, he took it to a shop for the brakes, while they were fixing the brakes he started talking to them about it, he had already had the fuel filter changed and it didn't help and they thought it would be the pump or regulator. They only regulator I could find is under the hood, and they were saying there is something on top of the tank, which haynes did not show.

He has 130k plus on it, and is thinking of buying a new truck so he doesn't want to put a whole lot into it, and doesn't want to replace a bunch of parts while sorting it out. If it were me, I'd take it to Ford, let them figure it out and then let them fix it, but that is me, I prefer to take it to the guys who are trained on what they sell.

Have the codes read, why would the pump care if its a 1/4 full or full, it just pumps gas. The pump and sending unit is an assy yes, but thats it, two seperate functions, one pumps gas and the other measures quantity.

I think his driveability concern is not related. Need codes to help sort out the problem.

^ true before you jump into anything

But if it were my truck I'd be pulling the tank,

I've seen the filter bag deteriorate and strand out and get wrapped up around everything, maybe it is pulling on the sending unit and clogging the pickup, who knows, been a while since I've seen one of these pumps anyway

Idk, hard to diagnose not having the truck in my driveway haha

The fuel gauge/sending unit are reading correctly, and as long as it is low on gas it run fine without any hesitation. His problem is when it is about half to full tank of gas, when he is going down the road and wants to speed up a little, then it hesitates. there are no warning lights/check engine, so would it still have a code?

If the check engine light does not come on, can there still be codes in there? I thought there were codes only when the light comes on, correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!
