faulty 2001 fuel pump
I own a 2001 with a 4.2 liter 6 in it. I had to have it towed home recently when I could not get it started. No check engine or service engine soon lights show on the dash. It turned over and chugged but would not start. It quite chugging and now just turns over. I replaced the fuel filter and I am going to disconnect one side of the fuel line from the filter and have someone turn it over to view if any gas comes through. I believe that the fuel pump is bad. Am I missing something or is this a good conclusion? My neighbor is a body shop owner and he is planning to help me remove the bed and slip a new pump in. Should I buy a new pump and replace the one that is in the gas tank or is there something that I am overlooking?
Thanks!

Fuel pump, Pressure regulator, Fuel pump relay.
Did you verify you have no codes by getting them checked, or are you going by your check engine light that may be burnt out or removed before you bought it?

I know that there are no service engine codes with this failure to start issue. I swapped the relays in the fuse box and I also disconnected the fuel line where it enters the fuel filter to check for fuel getting to it. None was pushed to the filter when I tried to start the truck. I called a local Ford dealer to verify that that my truck does not have a fuel pump module that others on this forum have found to be corroded. I am about ready to buy an OEM pump and put it in. Have I done all that I need to do before I spend $350 on a new pump? When I drop the tank, will I have to disconnect the filler hose or is there enough flex in to leave it attached?
Thanks!!

I thought you were going to slide the bed. I like sliding the bed, I can sit on the frame, no dirt in the eyes. less to disconnect. Disconnect the filler hose and wiring harness and bed bolts and there it is.
While you are at it you might want to check out the tank straps for rust.

I checked the shut off switch and it had not popped up so there was nothing to push back down. I switched two relays in the fuse box that were associated with the fuel system and nothing changed. The fuse in the box was also in good shape. I pulled the fuel line where it goes into the new filter and turned on the ignition. No fuel sprayed out so I assume that the pump is not working. I called a Ford dealer and the parts guy told me that my truck does not have a fuel module that others have posted is mounted above the spare tire. It seems that people have had issues with it corroding and ruining the board inside. I would have prefered to lift the bed but the guy who sprayed in muy bed liner did not take the bolts out. He just sprayed right over them. I guess that I will lower the tank. I thinkk that it is about 1/3 full. is there anything else I can try before I shell out $300 for a new OEM Ford pump assembly? List is $421 and I am getting a big discount through my neighbor.
Thanks!

I would verify that there is power going to the pump!! Either at the fuel cut-off switch, or at the pump connector! All this could be the product of a blown fuse... I would tell you the fuse number, but the Ford shop manuals (there are two) are not worth the paper they are printed on for some things!! In order to find the "fuel pump" you have to look under PUMP, and guess which one they are talking about!! Yep, there are THREE choices...

So, if you can find the correct fuses, make sure there is power to them... There will be a low current fuse, and a high current fuse... Low current to turn the relay on that supplies high current to the pump... Of course I can't verify this, but I'm pretty sure that is how this works...
Good luck!!
Cheers!!!

Did you end up buying a whole new assembly? What's a reasonable cost for someone to fix it in a parking lot? I do not have the tools necessary to do it myself.
Thanks
