my husband has a 1997 ford f150 xlt extended cab and I'm wanting to upgrade the factory stereo system for a surprise
but I'm clueless on what to buy?
i.e.
are the rear and front speakers same size?
I believe the radio is a double den but not absolutely sure? I like the "in dash video receivers"
would it be wise to buy new speaker wire as well?
we are middle aged I'm not looking to recapture our youth in a tricked out system in these things but we like to hear the music so i'd appreciate any recommendation on the system receiver and speakers.

Double din video would be nice. 5x8's are the stock size speaker's for front and back. New speaker wire would help if you were to run an amp but if you want nice sound just buy some good speakers. I installed kicker 5x8's in my truck and have pretty decent sound. But I'm sure you will lots of different suggestions. Good luck

FYI If you go with a double din the area behind the dash will need to be modified for it to fit. It's not too hard but it's much more work than your typical head unit changeover. A dremel tool is needed to remove the bracket that normally supports the factory deck.

 

If you go to Crutchfeild.com, you ill be asked to put in year make model ect...and they will tell you Exactly goes with his truck,and if im not mistaken,you can use anywhere from 5x9 to 6x8 on the factory speaker replacement.

 

I really love my Pioneer D Series 6X8's. 6X8 is the actual OEM size - cross my fingers. I also am very partial to Pioneer car stereo's. I've owned several over the years. I've never had one quit on me, and I've only discarded them for upgrades in technology. I personally really love have USB as an option. I have a short little Patriot 32GB stick that has plenty of music on it.

Yes beware, they're not true double din units. You can kind of see it in this picture. A double din is not difficult to install but does require a little cutting as stated above.

If you have someone install the system for you, make sure they use a wiring kit. It's about 20-25 dollars for the head unit and all 4 speakers. Also ask the installer to retain all of your old speakers and stereo. That way if your husband decides to sell the truck, he can swap this stuff out. The stuff in my F150 used to be in my Ranger. It was an easy swap.... same kit for both trucks.
