I made a post asking what kind of exhaust setups people have on their f150's a couple days ago and nobody responded. Through my own research I've have discovered that the flowmaster super 44's sound really nice. Borla, and Magnaflow also produce a nice deep sound if you are willing to shell out the extra cash.
All you would really need for a nice low rumble would just be wield in mufflers, or a catback. You could go with a mid-pipe too if you wanted although, it sounds like for what your wanting its not neccesary.
It will not hurt your gas milage though, if anything it will help it a little bit. Improved exhaust flow, means improved mpg.

Cut the muffler out and just run a strait pipe out and see what you think. I did that on my 5.4 and I love it.

I think i got maybe a half a mpg or so. And I used the stock size pipe I bought from auto zone which was 2 3/4 i think then I just put a tip on it which made it sound alot beter.

Go to the aftermarket reviews and look at that exhaust thread, it has about three pages worth and should answer any question you would have

I just did my exhaust and love it. It is 2.5" pipe, get a section longer that 4ft. and two connectors and 4 clamps. Cut out the muffler and replace with straight pipe. It sounds awesome. Took me all of 30 mins. for less that $40.
