Default exhaust question

I have a 99 4.6l and its bone stock. I was wanting to get an exhaust but being a broke college student I wanna do this as cheap as possible. So I dont want straight pipes but I want it louder than stock. If I cut the muffler off completely is that basically staight pipes? Should I gut the Cats? Straight pipes are no cats and no muffler right? I have no idea how much volume difference this will make, never had any experience with exhausts. Thanks.

I have duals from that connect to 1. It sounds real good. But I want to cut the muffler off bc yes that will make it louder. I've here if you cut the cat off it sounds really sputty if you know what I mean. It's not a crispt sound. You can find cheap mufflers that have good sound. My buddy has a flow master with one pipe and it's louder then my duals.

I want duals but I think Im going to just buy a muffler and put a tip on the end cheap and will get the job done... but I was thinking bout doing a muffler delete(which is cut out the muffler completely right), or gutting the muffler the welding it back together. Any suggestions on what muffler?

Flowmaster flowmaster flowmaster. Everyone I know that has one is stratified with it. You can take the muffler off an it'll sound real good. Another thing I've herd is hallow out the cat. Which would just be taking everything outta it and putting it back. If I were you I'd just get a flowmaster.

Flows sound good, but the drone it was kills me on them. I have had them on 2 different cars and would not buy another one.
If you are wanting a cheap one, some autoparts stores sell Thrush mufflers and they are less then half the price of Flowmaster but not nearly as loud.

Just cut the muffler off I did before I cut the cats off and add a Flowmaster(super 44). I had all the cats and duals out the corner of the box sides and it sounded great. I wanted a deeper tone and that's when I add the flowmaster witch made it quieter, so I cut the rear two cats off and now I love it!

I had 2 into one, with two cats, then a 18" short pipe and then the muffler, and long pipe to back of truck. I cut the 18" short pipe, took out the entire rear exhaust muffler/pipe, then bought another 18" short pipe to take the sound past the rear cab, then a 90 degree pipe, and a short turn down pipe. It comes out about a foot in front of the passenger rear wheel. When I'm not on the gas it sounds quiet as can be, but if I step on the gas, you can hear the big V8 sound. Same if i'm out on the road, if i'm not stompin' on it you can't hardly hear it rumble. I'm satisfied with my results.
