Default Engine swap

We have a 98 F150 with a good 5.4L. It's got the offroad package reg. cab long box. The frame is shot. Also have an 01, might be 02, reg. cab long box 4x4 with the 4.6L. It has blown head gasket possibly and leaking oil somewhere. How hard would it be to swap the 5.4 in place of the 4.6? I'm sure it can be done, just didn't know if things would all just match up or if there would be a lot of swapping stuff back and forth. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, the 5.4 you have is non pi and the 4.6 is..if you could source a 5.4 pi intake manifold you could do the pi swap and gain some extra ponies during the swap.

Considering he has both trucks, does it actually matter if he has 4x4 on one and not the other? If the trans on the 4.6 truck is good, he could put a torque converter for the 5.4 behind the new engine and use his old trans. He could really even use the same computer and harness with some slight modifying and just get tuned for the new operating parameters. Not trying to be a dick just wanted to ask since I wasn't sure.

No problem bud. We're all here to help each other. Yes. He could use PI heads & intake for more power.

It's pretty much drop in other than the tune as far as I know. I was contemplating suggesting to use the tranny, transfer case, pcm, and harness from the donar truck if it were 4x4. But then I started thinking about PATS, ESOF and the other differences between the year models. If it were me, I'd slap some PI heads & intake on it drop the 5.4 in using all of the existing components (except the torque converter, use the 5.4 unit) of the 4.6 truck harness & all and get a programmer with a custom tune.

Sorry I thought saying the 98 had the Off Road package would mean that it would obviously be 4x4. Not looking for any performance gains just a usable truck. These are farm use trucks. I could pull the heads on the 4.6 and fix it probably, but having this other truck frame being shot and a good engine, thought that might possibly be the easier and cheaper route to go. I think the transmissions are different between the two. I'll have to go check sometime. They've both been sitting in the weeds for 6 months. Thanks for the info so far.

Can't use a E4OD converter in a 4R70W. He would have to get a converter for a 5.4/4R70W combo
