Umm... The 10th digit is the model year. In the case of the '98 and the "W", that's the correct usage of the 10th digit. "W" is '98, '97 is "V" .

So a 10th digit = '3' indicates a 2003.

Engine codes are in position 8. a "6" there indicates a 4.6 liter in an F series or Econoline.

Here's the link to a Ford VIN Decoder:

Ok so the vindecoder is a big help but according to the rest of the post's data and my Vin number I have a 6 in the 8th digits place indicating that I have a romeo engine. BUT!!! my engine has a sticker right on it that say Winsor. So what is with that

It is the 10TH digit from the RIGHT! lol. My 1998 has a W. My 1997 has a 6. it is not the 8th digit from the right. look it up in the JVC Magazine. It breaks down the entire vincode for ya!

But most of us read/write english, so we read from left to right, not right to left. Which makes it the 8th digit.

Truth be told, even the handful of languages that are read from right to left still read numbers left to right.

I've heard "w" is Romeo and the "6" is Windsor.. kinda backwards.

in some of the middle of the production years they used what ever parts ford had sitting on a shelf to ship to engine plants. When I replaced the 4.6 in my gf's mustang it had 1 cylinder head from a romeo and 1 cylinder head from a windsor. She bought it brand new out of high school..
