I'm having some noise described as the OP but I noticed mine on cold start. The noise can only be heard when I put the truck in gear. When I crank it from a cold start i don't hear the noise until I shift to drive or reverse. The noise starts to be heard. If I let the truck sit for 3 mins the noise is less obvious when I up it in gear. After driving a few minutes I don't notice the noise anymore. I never hear the noise after a cold start. It only happens when the truck sits for a while.
I bought the truck used with 159k on it, 2001 crewcab 5.4 engine. I was told to put 20w50 and I did on my first oil change. I then started to learn about the antidrain valve filter and to use 5w20 on our trucks. I changed the oil and filter for synthetic 2w30 Castrol and motorcraft OEM filter after 2 weeks to try out to see if it will get better. I noticed a slight improvement on the noise but not much.
I hear the noise from the passenger side. If I put in gear and I get out I can hear the noise coming from the passenger wheel well area. Could this be an exhaust leak?
The truck drives fine and shifts fine. The idle is slightly rough but not bad. No codes. I did a full tune up: changed all plugs for motorcraft ones, cleaned MAF, pulled TB out and cleaned IAC, pulled upper air intake valve and cleaned, changed PCV valve, check all vacuum hoses and replaced bad ones, changed AT fluid in stages(8 quarts so far). The only leak I see is a small power steering one and I believe is the hose. I got underneath trying to look around the exhaust manifold but I don't think I see any black exhaust marks around it. I have to look at it again.
I took it to the ford dealership because there was a recall for the cruise control switch that was never done. They did their regular inspection and nothing was wrong but I'm sure the noise was not present when the truck got there.
Never heard of 2w 30. Sounds like some wacked rice burner oil you got in there ? 5w 20 works best.
Noise at cold start is almost always= wrong oil/wrong filter. I've seen many with noisy start-ups. That's directly from quicky oil change places,- or from using the wrong stuff.
Yea, sometimes it's to late to fix once the damage is done.
Hope someone can offer some advice on resolving this issue. Have an '03 5.4 with about 110,000 miles. About 5,000 miles back it started making what I will describe as a valve train noise at startup. It is especially noticeable when it has been sitting anything more than 30 minutes. Only slightly noticeable on cold starts. The noise is reminiscent of an engine whose lifters have no oil. Am running factory spec oil which is changed every 3,000 miles. The gauges and lights indicate full oil pressure. The service manager at the shop I use says it is normal for F150's to do this and that there are millions out there doing the same thing.
My question: Is this normal and is the engine being damaged in any way?
Btw, the noise goes away after a minute or so.
Thanks for any help.
Is it possible that the noise you are hearing could be worn timing chain tensioners? I have a 02' Mustang GT that made a similar noise after it had sit and over time it got worse. I suspected that's what it was and took action and found that the tensioner had wore all the way down and was more or less just sitting there causing the chain to make noise on start up that sounded like lifters rattling. Well after I got new tensioners and replaced the timing chains all was well and still is.

lol i meant 5w20. what kind of damage are we taking about? why it only happens at cold start? is it oil not getting to the valves?

I really don't know. The oil has always been changed regularly and the miles seem low for the tensioners to be worn. May need to take it to
Ford and see if they can diagnose the problem.
If it were the tensioners wouldn't the problem be continual rather than just at startup?

Thanks for your thoughts.
Mine only did it on start up at first, it got to the point later on at certain rpms that you'd occasionally hear a rattle. They work using oil pressure to tighten the chain so if they are worn they may not tighten all the way up, in some cases the chains will stretch causing the tentioners to do all they can to compensate for the slack. A friend of mine has the same problem on a 99 Grand Marquis with less than 100,000 miles on the car and the engine in that car is spotless. If you look around on the web you'll find it's fairly common the surface of the tensioners themselves are nylon so you can imagine what could happen.
Yea the lash adjusters (lash adjusters are what lifters are to a push rod motor) take a big hit as well. .Look up "orange can of death" for more info.
I can't tell you how many orange can's I see at car shows it makes me cringe. I also don't understand all the additives people add to oil like Lucas for example. I see people buying Lucas oil stabilizer all the time from Walmart and auto part stores thinking it's some kind of magic in a bottle. I'm big in quality oil, filters, and used oil analysis. I wouldn't touch a orange can of death, though the ultra's are pretty decent. My filters of choice are Motorcraft, Mobil 1, Bosch D+, and Pure 1. I even run a motorcraft filter on my v-twin B&S lawn mower.

You do that too ehh..
Yea, if vehicle owners would just look to their owners manual when they wanna play Joe Maintenance, they might not be so deadly.
well in my case it turned out to be an exhaust leak. I have one bolt stripped. i can feel the air escaping. I guess I have to order a new set off studs and remove this manifold. Hopefully the other bolts come out and don't break.
I guess I will need to use a helicoil to fix the stripped one.
I was hoping I can find a bolt that fits that hole right above the bolt and make piece of metal that can be used to tighten that corner of the manifold. I just don't have a clue of what bolt size that hole is. This will be a temporary fix until i have the time to get the manifold out.
