Engine noise on startup
I've yet to see the benefit of adding Lucas stabilizer to any late model engine let alone ours that require such the light 5w20. Have you seen the stuff that comes out? It pours likes molasses. That has to break down or else I see a viscosity of that nature hindering lubrication in places with tight passages. Just my thought. I tried some in my 4.0 ohv ranger and it just made the valve train noise at idle worse
Put some Cam Lube with molly (don't use the paste type) or Dry Moly Lubricant.
Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2), chemically bonds itself to metals it greatly reduces friction and wear by providing a thin film of lubricant that reduces metal to metal contact and reduces risk of component failure
Overhead Cam Engines are sensitive on Oil Viscosity. Don't use 5/10w30 unless it's already have high mileage. Tight Bearing Clearance is the reason why it's recommended to use Lower Viscosity on Low Mileage Overhead Cam engine to provide lubrication on Valve Train to prevent Dry start up.
Higher viscosity will provide better Protection and Lubrication because Oil is actually losing viscosity the longer you run it. Engine wear increases the bearing clearance. More bearing clearance will reduce Oil Pressure increase the oil flow.

- Well it's no longer standard lol. Lucas is Snake-oil poison to these engines. Only 5w30 or 5w20. The ONLY reason Ford recommends 5/20 is because you get a little bit better gas mileage. Just never go thicker. - Otherwise certain areas will go dry. There's only one additive you can add to the crankcase that won't screw w/viscosity and does was it's suppose to do in these engines IMO. That would be "AutoRX". Once you get past the hype, the stuff really works.

I'm having some noise described as the OP but I noticed mine on cold start. The noise can only be heard when I put the truck in gear. When I crank it from a cold start i don't hear the noise until I shift to drive or reverse. The noise starts to be heard. If I let the truck sit for 3 mins the noise is less obvious when I up it in gear. After driving a few minutes I don't notice the noise anymore. I never hear the noise after a cold start. It only happens when the truck sits for a while.
I bought the truck used with 159k on it, 2001 crewcab 5.4 engine. I was told to put 20w50 and I did on my first oil change. I then started to learn about the antidrain valve filter and to use 5w20 on our trucks. I changed the oil and filter for synthetic 2w30 Castrol and motorcraft OEM filter after 2 weeks to try out to see if it will get better. I noticed a slight improvement on the noise but not much.
I hear the noise from the passenger side. If I put in gear and I get out I can hear the noise coming from the passenger wheel well area. Could this be an exhaust leak?
The truck drives fine and shifts fine. The idle is slightly rough but not bad. No codes. I did a full tune up: changed all plugs for motorcraft ones, cleaned MAF, pulled TB out and cleaned IAC, pulled upper air intake valve and cleaned, changed PCV valve, check all vacuum hoses and replaced bad ones, changed AT fluid in stages(8 quarts so far). The only leak I see is a small power steering one and I believe is the hose. I got underneath trying to look around the exhaust manifold but I don't think I see any black exhaust marks around it. I have to look at it again.
I took it to the ford dealership because there was a recall for the cruise control switch that was never done. They did their regular inspection and nothing was wrong but I'm sure the noise was not present when the truck got there.
