Default Engine Noise (Knock)

First of all, thanks for reading this post I hope it is in the right area.

2001 F-150 XLT 5.4L

To simplify things I made a short video with the sound. If anyone could take a look at it and let me know what you think the issue may be I would appreciate that.

In words, It is a slight knocking sound primary when the engine is started cold. I have no clue what this is and I want to make sure im not damaging anything.

Regards,
Lucas

Sorry NO cam phasers in your year truck. I'm leaning to the timing chains and guides or the lash adjusters.. It should be a bit louder at the front, but sort of sounds like that underneath, if its the guides. The pan radiates sound, being it has all the hollow area.

Sorry but it is just too hard to tell honestly (for me anyways) with my speaker set up. I'll try it later on my home computer, not this laptop.

Thanks for correcting me there akdoggie... Those definitely sound like possible issues. I guess i'll look into the process of checking those. I might dive in and see what I can do (If it isn't too hard) Think it is a critical issue or not so much?

Have you got a mechanics stethoscope you can use? If not a piece of garden hose (cut off of course) and listen on the valve cover and see if the noise is loud in one area over another. Check the front of the head/valve cover and see if the sound is there. You can do the same underneath to see if you can isolate the problem. It could even be a cracked/broken flywheel. Like I said, my laptop speakers (w/o my headphones) doesn't do the sound definitively enough.

You can use a tire iron or a long screwdriver for a stethoscope too.

Sounds like piston slap to me. Piston slap occurs in all motors to a certain degree. However, some are louder because there is excessive clearance between the cylinder and block/bore. If I am correct, the noise you are hearing is one or more pistons "clanking" against the cylinder wall. As the motor heats up, the metal will expand, and the clearance is reduced - thus becoming quieter. It is fairly common on modular motors. Some of them vibrate as well when you've got in drive, and idling.

BTW, it is very common in the Windsor built motors. All 5.4's are built in Windsor.
I've changed my thought.... read post 12

Ok I finally found my headphones so I just relistened to the engine. It sounds like there is no oil pressure or very little. There are numerous lifters rattling, especially when he revs it up near the end.

Oil pump or clogged screen? I'm leaning that way sort of. It could still be the guides and timing components, but the 8 cyl's ticking, leans more to lack of oiling.

You may end up pulling the pan and checking the screen and such. It really sounds an oiling situation. How about a video of the under hood sounds? From the right side to the left side, including the front sounds? That would help narrow down exactly where it is coming from. The underbody sound is like low oil pressure or lack of oil. The in cab sounds like lifters (oil).

Lash adjusters. Probably the passenger side. Mine will do that when cold as well. But yea, then it goes away when it starts to warm up. How many miles Lucas ?
