Question Engine Bogging

Hey guys I'm new to the forums but I love my F-150!! Hoping someone can help me get my issue resolved.

I have an 02' SuperCrew Lariat that has been amazing. I just turned 100k on it and am having my first "trouble." Just recently the engine started bogging if I'm at a low RPM and try to accelerate slightly. Its a 4.6 liter v8 and if i stomp on the gas, as always, it has plenty of giddy up. However, the problem has persisted. It did get temporarily better when I added fuel injector cleaner, but for a very short time, as in a day or so.

I have replaced the fuel filter but it did not seem to help. I had a diagnostics test run on it and it says it could be the fuel injectors, fuel pump, or ignition coil. The problem has gotten slightly worse. The truck will sometimes idle roughly and at times when I accelerate the engine may even die completely until i restart it.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this same issue or knows whats going on. I plan on having it worked on in 2 weeks but I would like to know where to start.

-Thanks

I would start by changing the plugs and COPs.

Thank you. I have already changed the spark plugs and wires. What are COP's?

COPs are coil over plugs. Your coils that are over every plug.

First post. I'm having the same problem now. '02 Supercrew at just below 100,000 miles. It all started when I had my battery replaced at friggin' Wal Mart. 2 weeks later the idle was rough and would shudder when accelerating. I had the dealership check it and they replaced 1 COP.
2 weeks later the same problem again. Back to dealer. Replaced another COP. 2 months later, problem came back. Took it to a local mechanic who replaced plugs, air filter and fuel filter. 2 months later, problem is back.
I feel like a loon chasing my tail with this issue. The biggest frustration is that it is not a consistent problem. In every case, the service seemed to fix the problem, only to have it come back. The truck runs pretty close to normal when cold first thing in the morning. The service engine soon light comes on and goes off at random, so it is a bit unpredictable. I'm considering replacing all COP's just on principle, but that is not good problem solving. I'd prefer to actually know what is wrong. It seems suspicious that they would all start to go bad now, but maybe it is the best thing to do.
Any other experiences like this out there?

Sounds like you have an interrmitten misfire in one of your cylinders from the info you stated. If your check engine light goes on and off at random, that could be a problem with one of the spark plugs or COP's. If you have access to a diagnostics tool like a code reader, I would do that. The info from the tool would tell you what kind ENGINE problem you would be having. I.E. misfire in #2 cylinder. Hope that helps!

Seems about the same problem as I'm having. 97 f150 136 4.6. So far I've changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires and coil packs, I have the tower packs rather than COP. Problem still persists, not a clue on where else to look yet.

Thanks Goalie. My 2 trips to the dealer to fix 2 COP's at different times kinda torqued me. I'm pissed that my Ford dealer didn't give me insight about the way I now understand that these parts begin to fail. As I'm told by a mechanic, when one goes bad, more current is directed to the other coils, thereby beginning to burn them out. On the one hand, I don't blame them for not replacing coils on my truck that are not currently bad, but with the Ford Community knowledge and experience, it is nothing less than incompetence or dishonesty that would prevent them from telling me this.
After going to an Independent service center, they did not get any error codes when they ran a diagnostic, so just changed my plugs. Even though it seemed to help, I'm now gearing up to replace all COP's. Since the real test will be to see how it behaves 6 months from now, I'll just have to verify the diagnosis and repairs later on.
The feedback on this forum has been really helpful. Thanks

Default misfire

got a 97, 4.6, 190,000 miles. The only times (twice) I've had the rough running was at high altitude (6,000+) after running for a couple of hours at a constant speed, then idling down into a town. Almost died, but after ten seconds seemed to recover and all was fine.
No mechanic I talked to had any ideas.
