Default Edge evolution advice

So after months and months of wanting to buy an evolution I finally got one. Got it installed and could use a few pointers. I got it set on performance canned tune and am running premium but the engine still pings under heavy load...think adding some octane boost would cure that or should I switch to a different setting. Also, I noticed you can customize your settings when you tune it and I am guessing you can get it better to your liking if you do that, but not sure what I should set the shift firmness and shift points and all that? BTW, its a 98 4x4 with the 4.6

If your pinging you need to retard the timing in the RPM range its happening. Im surprised your pinging off a canned tune, usually they are very conservative.

If you dont race the truck, I would leave your shift firmness where its at, there is really no benefit to increasing the pressure on shift firmness if your not going to be banging through the gears. I would put the shift points at around 5650 if its a PI motor, if its not I would probably put it at around 5250.

Dont touch the fuel settings unless you have a wideband o2 sensor.

Just go into the settings and reduce your timing until the pinging stops, simple as that and you don't have to touch any of the other settings if you don't want to.

Actually, ever since gas stations have started adding the 10% ethanol or whatever it is, the truck pings with regular gas so I have been having to run plus or premium before the tuner.

And I know I don't need to customize the settings, I was just curious if anybody with more experience with tuning had figured out a better setting then the canned tune depending on aftermarket parts and whatnot.

Max RPM...5400
WOT shift 1-2 ...5,000 2-3....5,000 3-4...4,800
Shift firmness 1-2...12 2-3....12 3-4...9
WOT fuel....1.2

Keep your shift points at least 400 RPM below your Max RPM.
Ease up on the 3-4 shift.
Make sure to correct your tire size and gear ratio.

I'm not sure it would be good to run the 91 octane tune if you are already pinging with the stock tuning though. It seems like you are asking for trouble there.

Wow thats nuts man. Sounds to me like the gas around your area sucks. OR, your not hearing ping and your actually hearing something else. Does the sound your hearing sound like marbles being rolled together in your hand?

Skizriz: Thanks for those settings...that exactly what I was hoping someone would post. But for WOT, canned setting is 110%, do you mean 120% when you say 1.2? And is the 5250 that the performance setting is on my max RPM.? And when I tried to adjust my tire size and gear ratio, it said unavailable on my truck.

JCP281: I wouldn't describe it sounding like marbles...more like theres metal shavings bouncing around in the cylinder or something. And it only happens with regular gas when under a load like up a hill or towing. Not sure what else it could be, and I retarded the timing by .5 and the "pinging" is gone now.

97BlueFlareside: If you know your truck well you will definitely feel the difference...and the shift firmness and shift points being higher is waaaayyy better than stock. And I actually bought it off the parts forum on here for 225 shipped. If your on the fence about getting one go for it, you wont be disappointed.
