Default Disappearing Odometer Reading

This is my 1st look at this board, so pardon me if this topic has already been discussed. I just found this board by accident, so I figured I'd try it out. I have a 2000 F150, XLT, 2x2, flareside, with 90k miles. So far, just the usual replacement stuff; battery, tires, brake pads, & shocks (all front & rear). Changed tranny fluid at 35K (probably need to do it again) and oil (Rotella T 5-40 synthetic) & filter every 5k miles.

My problem is that my odometer sometimes "disappears" for 10, 15, 30 minutes at a time until it's driven 20 - 30 miles. Sometimes upon restart (when still warm), it is ok; sometimes not. Even if it does not come on, I can still reset the odometer as usual. Whenever it disappears, it continues to register mileage. No problems with anything else electrical or mechnical so far. Anyone have any advice?

I dont know the cause, but I believe this to be a fairly common issue as I had the same problem with 99 f150 I had several years ago. I sold the truck before I ever had the issue looked into...

Try using the search button, this topic was discussed before. Memory tells me,its in the instrument cluster, a bad solder joint. And if I'm right, pictures showing a step by step were posted. Am not the handiest of sorts to find and report findings. Good luck. Oh, and by the way, WELCOME!

OK, I found it, sorry its the long way to get there. Go to Search, type in Bad solder joints. Find Odometer flickering by hhhtr111 dated 6-16-2008. Scrole down to F150 Texan, 6-22-2008. In there is the address to another site that shows the procedure to include pictures. Maybe if this helps, you can return the favor by teaching me how to post the address from one site to another? Good luck.

Thanks Torkum, thats the site I was referring to. Now, I know this is not computor 101, but some of us need it. Would you, Please help! We offer up our 45 years of twisting wrenches and get shunned when we ask for a return on our time. How did you transfer the site address into your post?

No problem Bill, go to the site/page that you want to post and up at the top of the screen were your address shows up click on it and it will highlight. When its highlighted right mouse click and select "copy" from the window that pops up. After that go back to the page you are posting on and when you are ready to insert the link right mouse click again and hit "paste" out of the box that pops up. Hope that helps.

Sheezamm!!!! That is exactly the info I was looking for! Less than 12 hours and I have everything I needed to know about it. Now, I have to get up the nerve to try to tackle it myself. MANY thanks to all of you that chimed in on this issue!

I thought this would be a big job. But with the instructions supplied, I had the job done in less than 1 hr. I started at 7:15 and turned the key to try it at 8:05. Worked like a charm. Would have been faster but the headlight switch took a while to get off. Found out there is a plastic piece locking it behind the plastic dash plate. If you pry the dash plate on the left side back 1/2 an inch and shine a flashlight in the crack, you will see this plastic piece locking it in. The nice thing is that it slides inward. Just use a screwdriver to push it in and then the headlight assembly will slide out. There is a screw hidden in behind this headlight assembly and that is why you cannot get the plastic dash plate off without taking the headlight assembly out.
Odometer reading has not gone out for hrs now. Before, I could not go minutes without it going out.
Note: I called the dealer for a fix. They said it would cost $1000 for the new dash module plus labor to install it.

Many Many thanks again.
