Default Differential fluids

I just changed my transfer case fluid with motorcraft XL-12 transfer case fluid (2 quarts).

Question, differential fluids for the front and back? I prefer the motorcraft fluids, but I know some are unavailable nowadays.

2001 f150, 5.4 4wd obviously....

Front 75w 90 full synthetic
Rear 75w 140 full synthetic

Correct?

Thanks for the info. in advance. I'd go to the dealer parts counter, but I've been mislead before. Example, 2 outta 3 dealers tried to sell me mercon V for the transfer case.

I could just look in my manual I guess

Side note: I also replaced the 4wd actuator, I have 4wd again, yippie.....

Default Differential fluids

You are correct on the weight oils. The rear requires full synthetic while the front does not require it, but wouldn't hurt anything. Also for the rear ford recommends you ad 1 bottle 4 oz of there friction modifier for the rear. Dont need the friction modifier for the front diff just rear. If your going to go other than motorcraft I'd go with valvoline or mobil 1 diff oil. They already come with the friction modifier already in them so you would not have to add any to it. Just make sure it says for limited slip differentials on the bottle.

1 qt of friction modifier??? You sure you don't mean 1 bottle, its not too big. Can't be room for more than 2 quarts right?

Friction modifier if you have a limited slip.

Check your door

Whoops my mistake meant to say 1 bottle (4oz) not 1 quart of the friction modifer. The manual says the rear holds 2.6 liters which equates to about 2.7 quarts for 8.8/9.75 inch axle. For one that has 10.25inch axle 3.3 liter or about 3.49 quarts. You just add the bottle of friction modifier into one of the quart of diff fluid.

The front holds about 2.11 quarts. Just so you know when your filling up your diff you really dont need to keep track of how much your filling in just keep filling until it starts oozing out of the fill plug, then let it level out. The torque spec is 35ftlbs for the bolts holding the diff housing. For the plugs about 12 to 18 ftlbs.

I always put the friction modifier in after the first quart. Don't wait until the end.

Also, it DOES NOT MATTER what the bottle of gear oil says about friction modifier. You still add the Motorcraft FM. Lots of people have experienced chatter by using the oil that says it has FM in it already.

Of course, all of this is a moot point if you don't have limited slip.

Gotchya, Ive decided i'm gonna wait and go to the dealership and get all the motorcraft fluids and additive for the front and rear just to be safe.

Thanks

35 ft. Lbs seems a little excessive on the rear bolts, you sure?
