Default Cruise Control Issues

The cruise control on my 97 xlt is nonexistent. I brought it to my ford dealer yesterday for the speed control recall to see if this would remedy the situation and nothing changed. I read online that I should replace the switch by the master cylinder where the speed control wires run into and 30 dollars later still nothing. Anyone have any ideas? The fuse for the speed control is fine I just cannot figure out where to go from here other than new switches for the steering wheel. Also there is no dash indicator light that turns comes on when I press the on button for the cruise control. Do the 97's not have one or is this part of the problem?

2002 FX$ here, I'm having problems with mine too. I hit the on button and then when I hit set its 50/50 if it works or not. The cruise light flickers on then goes away if it doesn't work - or sometimes I get lucky and it works for a little bit.

I know there is a way to test it. Cannot remember the code chart, but here goes. Hold "OFF" on the cruise switches, then turn the key on, but don't start the truck. The Cruise light will flash. After that hit On, Res, Coast, Set Accel in that order. If it is normal, the light will flash again, and the pedal will be pulled.

You should get some extra flashes if there is an issue, but I don't know the codes for the flashes.

Since you have a 97, there is no easy fix. You're going to have to go threw each part of the cruise control system and check for power/ certain resistance to find out exactly what part isn't working. Whether it be the servo, brake pedal sensor, buttons, fuses, speed sensor, etc.

Since you have an 02, you can run the self test and it should narrow down exactly what the issue is. The steps are in this post

Should this work for my 97?

not sure on the details of the 97 cruise control, but if there is a button on the steering wheel for it, it could be the clockspring in the steering wheel went bad. I think that's sorta common on the 99+

Im sure there are some better items to check before ripping apart your steering wheel tho.

Wouldn't hurt to try. I think it should, but they did have their differences.

By the by, thanks you TLB4 for posting the thread I was trying to reference. That's where I remember seeing it.

I did the self test, after pressing the "ON" button the cruise light flashed once. When I began pressing the "Resume/Coast/Set" sequence I got no lights at all. What does this indicate?

You hold off, then it flashes. You hit On, res, coast, accel. Right?
