Craigslist rear end
I've been wanting to re gear my trucks rear end to a higher gear ratio, but didn't want to spend 1k or more for the work. Well today I found a rear end out of a 2002 f150 with supposedly recently rebuilt Ford racing 4.10s 8.8 w/disk brakes on Craigslist for $400.
I forgot the details but I have a 1999 f150 2wd with an open diff. I remember it being in the 3.xx something but forgot the details...w disk brakes... Basically what I'm wondering are the rear ends interchangeable or do some not work with others??
Thanks

That is actually a lower gear ratio, but yeah it will work. If they are both an 8.8, it's easy peasy. If your current truck has the 9.75 (you didn't mention what diff you had currently), then there is a little more work. But still manageable.
AKdoggie can give you more details on specifics, as he just did a swap in his "Lil Red" truck.

I understood that, I just didn't explain as well as I should have. My bad. But yeah, they are a fairly easy swap if you have the correct tools.
FYI - a 4.10 is a lower gear ratio than the 3.55 is (more than likely you have a 3.55). Numerically it is higher, but as far as gear ratios are, it is a lower gear.

The problem with buying a rebuilt rearend parted out
Is who did it? Joe Shadetree? You know a factory is probably good, but have no idea if some jackass knew what he was doing.
Many shops F up rear ends when someone wants a gear change. Its something best done by real specialist if your paying for it. With the tools, patience, some guidance, and instruction any intelligent person can do it. Too many people in a hurry. Too many shops let unqualified people work on vehicles. Its on-the-job training. My stepson is a mechanic at a GMC dealership....I dont trust him to change oil in one of my vehicles. Seriously.
My wifes dumbass lil bro did one once after busting tooth on ring gear screwing around on a lifted chevy truck with 37" tires and huge engine. It was a gas guzzling 454 or such. It might have lasted 2000 miles....
