Complete Engine Rebuild/First Time Poster
I've been on this site for a while and I've found the opinions and information extremely valuable to I'm hoping to get some great advice. I own a 2001 f150 4x4 silver in color and it's been my favorite vehicle that I've ever owned. I took my truck in to my mechanic that I've used for 20 years to get a tune up because I'm thinking about selling it to get ready for the 2015 model and sure enough it needs a whole bunch of work. Long story short we took the motor apart and there was metal shavings everywhere so I've got to get new motor. I decided to go with a completely rebuilt motor and transmission for a drive out price of $4,900 (that included some ac work, new bushings, changed differential fluid and Mass air sensor cleaning.) I want some fun for my money so I was thinking about getting a new throttle body, bigger injectors, long tube headers with dual exhaust and some 4 chamber flow masters. Does the 4.6 liter motor have any mods that have more of an impact than others like heads, or boring out the block to get more air in mix? I'm a novice at best and have built several 302 motors but it's been 15 years since I've turned a wrench for hoarse power. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Cams, supper charger, up the compression, custom tune. All depends on how much you want to spend
I'm trying to stay under $7,000 all in. What cam would you suggest? I've been told a cam, new throttle body (I don't know what size yet) and beefed up injectors would give me the most horse power for the money... would you agree? No budget for supercharger.
To tell you the truth I haven't really looked into cams because it's way out of my budget so I'm not sure what type would be the best for you. The bigger injectors and throttle body wouldn't do anything with out a custom tune. I'm sure one of the other guys on here can chime in on what would be the best for you. Long tube headers will free up some horse power too. I'm only in high school and have a very limited budget so I haven't really looked into some of the more expensive Power upgrades.
EFans and Tune will be your biggest gains besides strapping a blower to it. Honestly LT, injectors and all that wouldn't gain you much and isn't worth it. The Lightnings don't even gain much with LTs until there over 500rwhp.

I know you have built some of these so ill ask. If he beefed up his cams will that just redistribute the HP/torque across the range or actually add some power to the formula? I know some people have ported and polished and gasket matched their heads with good results.

The truck will just be a daily driver. I sell industrial real estate so drive clients around on a daily basis plus I have a one year old. I can't have something that's in the shop all of the time or overheating on the freeway in August. That's why I decided to go with a completely rebuilt motor and transmission. After reading some posts I'm going to see if I can find a used lightning motor and trans combo. Houston has more junk yards than I care to admit so I might get lucky. Otherwise it looks like a supercharger is the only way I'm going to get the results I want.
You don't need the L tranny. Your tranny will bolt right up and would be less of a head ache to keep. Just have it rebuilt like your original plan. Just have them install a performance valve body or shift plate.
I bought my 2003 L motor off eBay with 32K miles for 4750 shipped in 2009 I think it was. Prices have only gone down since then. It had everything from the airbox to the exhaust and everything in between. They also included the ENTIRE wiring harness(Headlights to Taillights) from the L also. Broke it out the crate and dropped it in!
