Default Common Repairs/Maintance

My 2001 5.4L 4x4 just passed 150,000 and I've started to think more about maintenance and replacing/checking parts and fluids.

What started it off was when I went to get new tires the shop said I should replace the outer tie rod ends and idler arm. After doing some research I decided to replace a lot of steering/front suspension parts. Pitman arm, Idler arm, inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links and upper and lower ball joints are all getting replaced.

I want my truck to last as long as possible and I don't mind replace parts for it to do so. The only problem is I don't know what I should be looking into replacing/checking.

I've read the maintenance manual but that only gets you so far. What things should I be checking for to keep my truck running reliable and smooth?

Yep. All that suspension parts.plus shocks.

All the fluids.
Pcv, fuel filter, air filter.

That's about all you can do at a reasonable price. Other than that, just gotta wait until something breaks.

And if you live with a lot of salt like I do check exhaust manifold and all the rubber hoses on intake this should be done regularly but you probably already know and if your spare tire still up lube it take it down to put it back up check the spare tire mount for severe rust out it is common

You should follow the maintenance suggestions in the owners manual. change out fluids in the transmission, transfer case, brake fluid, coolant, oil and filter, Don't change the drive axle unless you run your truck through a lot of water where water gets into the case. If you do change it make sure you use friction modifier and gear oil as recommended. If you do not, your differential will soon be trashed.

Change filters (fuel, oil, air) per recommended by mfg. Clean MAF valve, inspect coolant hoses/vacuum lines and change as necessary. change PVC valve often (it is inexpensive and easy to do). Plugs every 50K. Inspect, inspect, inspect often

there is more so check the owners manual. There is no need to overdo it so inspection and judgement should always be part of your maintenance routine. However, when something seems to be going bad and I know that sooner or later I will need to replace it, I always replace it now.

Sure. Replace them.

Make sure to replace your engine and transmission too. Preventative maintenance.

No. Don't. Im kidding. Those fall in the category of not fixing unless they are causing you issues. Changing your u joints before they fail is wasted money.
