Cold starts!
I think the whine is the starter staying engaged a little too long. I noticed the ignition switch doesn't spring back as well to the run position in the extreme cold. You have to consciously return it to run position.
Whines at or below zero I wouldn't worry about.
If I leave mine outside over night it starts harder than yours and whines for 30 seconds. I have a diehard agm battery. Baby is huge. Far as I can tell it's a pulley or PS pump.

All you do is pull the return line, pump out the good and top it back off with better. Use Amsoil Tranny Fluid. I'd get 2 quarts of that, so you can flush it out well.
It won't make a peep after.
