Default Coil Packs-Difference

I'm new here and I have the 2001 Screw 4.6L and had a coil pack go out, Will not be returning to the shop for that anymore. One is replaced the remaining 7 still have 150k on them so it's just a matter of time.

Local ford Dealership $75.75 per pack Part 12029- Ford, DG491- Motorcraft

E-Bay Motorcraft DG-508- $80.00 for a set of 8 & Lifetime Warranty (10 yr)

Internet sales in general Motorcraft DG-508 $50.00 a pack

I understand that they had problems with the DG-491 and switched over to the DG-508.

Whats the difference one made in China, cooper vs Aluminum a lot of price different, like to know if I' comparing apples to apples.

Thanks

Order from tousley ford, they'll sell it 10% over cost

I'd stay stock, don't go aftermarket. I have had good luck with BWD from oreillys

Hey I'm kind of in the same situation as you. I've always been steered away form buying non-motorcraft parts but when I saw a 60 dollar part that I need 8 of, I definitely took a look around. I'm still not sure what I'm going to buy but I did find out that rockauto.com sells the motorcraft dg-508 for 42.79. After doing some research though I found out that they aren't the best to deal with (terrible customer service). So I asked around and found out some of the major online part retailers will price match. So as of right now I'm leaning towards buy a set of 8 motorcraft for ~350 through auto parts warehouse (price matched form rock auto). Its the cheapest I've found yet.

As far as the ones sold on ebay I'm just not sure what to make of them. They say motorcraft but Im really not sold on it. I have emailed some of the sellers asking them to make sure they are in fact made by motorcraft and not a motorcraft dg-508 comparable part. Well see what they come back saying.

The other part that gets me is that the motorcraft dg-508 from ford says 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and the ebay part say lifetime. I would think that motorcraft is the one that makes the warranty so it should be the same no matter where it is sold. I also notice the part sold by Ford has white writing across the top and the part sold on ebay is blank. I don't know if this matters but it was something I picked out.

I recently changed all 8 plugs/COP's. I got 8 Accel COP for $175 off of amazon. I've only put about 500 miles on them so far. I know now that changing them isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I put the Motorcraft plugs in, but decided to go with Accel for the coils.

The ones from Global are "legit". They're simply Motorcraft's without the top label. This has been confirmed several times. I had a set of Global's on my old truck with no problems. $90 for all 8 vs. $75 a piece for the same quality is a pretty easy choice.

Thanks to all, I still don't trust a lot of the advertisement from site to site, I even checked a few ford sites and some list the DG-491 superceeded by the DG-508. If you get a response from the ebay sites claiming them to be original MC parts at that price and not knock offs, let us know.

I have heard there was some resistance difference in between brands, but who knows

Im sure there all made in china, but for $80.00 bucks for a set of 8, I could afford to replace some from time to time.

A coil pack is a coil pack. You have to remember what it does. It sends the power to the spark plug to ignite. The spark plug wont burn "hotter" because there is more juice behind it. It is designed with limits. When it comes to stuff like this I always buy factory parts, plus the coils have had major issues, so Ford updated it. Pretty much everything out there is using the old design. They are not going to spend the extra money to retool their production for a lower cost than dealer part.

I would go with the ones from ford or accel, your not going to have to worry about the quailty of the parts. I do agree with you if one goes the others arn't far behind and it's less of a head ache that way. My 97 250LD truck i just one at a time and it was a pain in the *** plus it would blow a spark plug every so often. I would do the plugs while your in there too.

I agree. Might as well do the plugs. Then you wont have to worry about going back in. Some of the boots may tear. You will just need some paitience to get them all off. I always unscrew the coil and then turn it a few times to let it free up as much as it can.
