No need to call someone a complete retard. Where I'm from, to pass inspection, they plug into obd2 and check for any codes that will throw a light. No light, no problem. They then do a visual check. Around here, any sort of long tube header WILL NOT pass. Catalytic converters included or not. But as far as the non-foulers go, they work. That is how I pass inspection with gutted cats. Same with many others.

To the op, what exactly failed you? Do they run a sniffer? I'm assuming since you said no CEL that you've done something about the O2 sensors? The only other thing failing you would be visual. And, like I said, around here you have to know someone, or be running stock(or equivalent) cats.

I run the paces setter LT's with C.A.R.B. compliant magnaflows. Well, because the the magnaflows were the cheapest at the time. NEVER do a thing with your O2's, there's absolutely no need. AFAIK there's 3 types of catalytic converters today,

Federal = States other than Cali and NY.
California = Specific
New York = Specific

Yea, those states have there own converters lol. The visual inspection was voted down in all the above unless warranted. Meaning they need a reason.

This is fairly new, but it all should be effect by now I expect.

Yea they old way wasn't working out for many, so it has been re-written. BUT, this was only and issue in the past for select states mentioned above and no others. Well wait, come top think of it, there were changes Federally as well. As some states began adopting California's standards lol. Even Legislatures like to copy and paste.

So if you don't live in the specific states mentioned, go with C.A.R.B. compliant cats. Maggy's had the cheapest federally mandated types. Not sure who's selling them now. I've been running my set up since 07/08.

That's a pretty good summary of it. Here's our MagnaFlow page on catalytic converters with information on the NY- and CA-specific cats.

Here's a short video on how to pick cats, too. I know most people here probably know what they're looking for, but there's some good info in it.

We do sell Federally legal direct-fit cats and we also sell them to meet NY and CA emissions. Our website tool for that is very intuitive to help you find the right cat, but let me know via PM or in a response if you have any questions about it.

Yea, but get the correct size, = 2.5" ID X 2.5" OD IF your just attempting to squeeze one in.. It's Tight if your a 4x4. I modified mine, but you may be able to get a slip fit by now. (?) You don't want no part of direct fit as they won't work with your set up.
If you still have your old converters, you'll come out ahead as far as money out of pocket, then money right back in. That's if you install them yourself and know what to do. Your old four are worth more than the new set. Just run them up to the salvage yard.
Personally I modified my Magnaflow Cat's to slip fit my header collectors. It was easy to do because the original opening supports a slip fit collar for the Pacesetter collectors, - did this when Mr T was semi active on some sites...way back when lol. Learned a lot from that guy. But yea, they might have one sized from the factory for that application.
The distributor should be able to help there.

It looks like your a 4x4 ? Hard to tell with so many lifting 2wd's now days. Anyway, the shorter the better if your 4WD. I'd opt for the shortest CARB compliant converter you can find. Magnaflow has a good rep and most definitely understands the geometry.

Yea, just replace what you got then. Are your O2's in the same local as factory ?

You'll need to crawl under and see what you did and take some measurements / plan the install. Like I said, it's tight on the 4x4's and the measurement has to pretty close to exact when thru or they won't fit right. The cross over can hit as well. Go for a stress free fit and accurate MM's. Any stress on the sytem and there's a good chance of breaking bolts on the exhaust manifolds...also with splitting the trans mount plate. Make it your own direct fit so to speak. Leaks aren't allowed, if so the CEL will let you know.
