"Insufficient EGR flow"
Possible causes: Clogged EGR passages in the manifold gooseneck
Bad EGR valve
Bad DPFE sensor
Bad EGR Vacuum Control Valve
Clogged edge orifice in EGR pipe (very unlikely)

Here's a primer on EGR: http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00217.html

The best bet for the trouble is cause #1. Next best bet cause #3.

Default P0401

Insufficient EGR Flow
Recommend cleaning EGR.
If cleaning the EGR valve and orafice(s) doesn't do the trick, then you're looking at a bad DPFE sensor. Common code and common cause.

Oops, Kattumaran you beat me do it.

I have a 02, had this code years back, Ford had issues with DPFE, suggest using only a new Ford replacement to avoid purchasing the junk that ford had trouble with. In the future its a good idea to put up the year and engine.

Reasonable advice, Bill, but be apprised that BWD, an American outfit would you believe, produces excellent quality aftermarket products that it retails through Advance Autoparts. My ride sports a replacement TPS and a DPFE sensor by BWD; they work perfectly and are quite reasonably priced.
