CAI Conversion or Adaption?
Hi All,
I have this CAI from a 2008 F150 5.4. I sold that truck but kept the CAI. Its a pricey K&N and I would like to repurpose it for the 2001 F150 Supercrew I now have. HAs anyone done this?
I see that the mass sensor is in a different location. does it matter?
The intake pipe is about 4" diameter, I see that the 2001 has 2 vacuum leading off of it, or would that be feeding off of it...
Any help and guidance would be appreciated. If someone wants to trade.. I have a brand new shiny intake pipe in bubble wrap. I was given an extra pipe by the kind folks at K&N
Thank you for reading

Nah, it won't for these trucks. It won't won't work for an 08 either unless you custom tune it to run a 4". Otherwise it would eventually compromise the motor from running it too lean. This is most likley why K&N sent you an extra pipe. I bet it's smaller in diameter.
I'd stay away from it, the factory CAI box is superior to the K&N's on these trucks. The factory set ups on these trucks can be modified to be even better.
The only after market system for these trucks that are an improvement are made by Volant. The composite is improved and Volant offers a dry filter element over oiled.

Both pipes are the same diameter. The CAI and a Bully Dog tuner did help the 2008 5.4 go from 13 mpg to 19mpg. Calculated by petrol used between fill ups and miles logged... maybe I was off ... tires were slightly larger...
Back to the original question... what mods can you say help with the mpg.? HP boost I really dont need. We pull 3 dirt bike on a trailer for 300 miles usually.
Thank you
Fritz
Don't overlook that the K&N "CAI" is also LAF - lower air filtration.
And the usual - the air is already cold. Any performance gains are most likely psychological (changing driving habits to make dreams come true) or from the lower restriction of the lower filtration. You might save gas but you'll be spending engine longevity.

Changing tube size without a tune to accommodate will have it all screwy as well.
i vote selling it and putting it towards gas is your best ROI

> Highly unlikely.
"did help," does not imply that they did it ALL.
I put a Cal Custom Hawk puter into my 76 Dodge MaxiVan and it "helped" it go from ~ 12 mpg to ~.16. It had a 360 V8 and a 2.71 rear.
Being able to SEE when I had a headwind or tailwind made a lot of the difference. So his being able to read his instant mpg was probably 2/3rds of his 6 mpg improvement. That leaves 2 mpg from the tuner. I could believe that.
