My guess is an issue with the Blend door, which is apparently common. I had a similar issue with my Explorer.

There are some explanations of self fixes out there in several of the forums like:
http://www.conceptualedge.com/blend-door/

and I also saw this:
http://www.heatertreater.net/Ford%20F150%2097-04.htm

You can also Google F150 blend door

It was recently posted that this AC problem may be a vacuum leak. It was mentioned that the blend door is vacuum operated.
Anyone here know if this is true?

I just had the same problem with my truck. While changing the battery a vacume line was knocked loose. The is a "T" right behind the battery with a small diameter black tube coming from it. The tube runs in through a rubber plug in the firewall. I would first check all the lines before the "T" to make sure the are connected because it is a real PITA. I would also check for vacume pressure at the "T" first. Then Right behind the gromet in the firewall is a flexible coupling that connects the 2 lines at the firewall. Thats where mine was pulled out of. If you remove the relay cover on top of the passenger dash you can see the line, but not the connection. I pulled the plug out of the firewall fished a wire up through to the relay access and taped the line to it to pull it out through the firewall so i could reconnect it.
