Default A/C compressor issues

Hello Everyone,

I think I have traced my noise to the A/C compressor. It looks like the disk on the face of the compressor is rattling. It makes a metallic almost grinding noise on and off (not constantly), the A/C being on doesnt seem to affect the noise. Do you think I should replace the whole compressor or just the clutch assembly? If I just need to do the clutch how hard of a job is it to do with the compressor still on the truck? Special tools? The A/C still blows cold and seems to be working fine otherwise. Is there a link to a write-up on this job somewhere? I have used the search, but Im coming up empty.

Thanks!

I would install a compressor clutch kit. Comes with the field coil, pulley and front hub. The pulley and front hub are simple. Field coil is the hardest part. Removal of the fan and shroud would be necessary. Field coil can be taken off with a pry bar. Reinstalled with a hammer. Taping easily on the center part of the field coil. Damaging either the inner or outer part will cause the pulley to not go back on. Shimming the front hub to pulley. Kit will come with shims and there will be one on the back of the old hub. Shim about .12-.15 with a feeler gauge.

Well I managed to get everything off and back on without removing anything extra. Space was tight, but it def can be done. I shimmed it to about .02 and you're right the field coil was certainly the hardest thing to get off. The bearings in the old clutch were missing ***** and it was very sloppy. Everything seems good now, no strange noises and the air still works. Mission accomplished!
