building a intake
so heres what i wanna do. i wanna take a rubber fernco coupling and run that off the throttle body. throw on some intake tubing, run that to the route of the stock intake piping and put a big cone on right where the big black air box or whatever that thing is would normally be is. my main question is how big is the outside diameter of the throttle body so i know how big of a coupling i need. other than that ill just put on the 90 degree elbow, run some piping down into that corner and put the cone on. and put the 2 holes in with gromets for the sensors of course. thanks !
Why? Do the gotts mod. Better performance.
Your proposal will perform worse than stock, it will be pulling in hot, dirty engine bay air. And your stock pulls clean, cooler air out of the fender well.
Now if you wanted to make a completely enclosed fiberglass box, and then run something from that to the fender well or right behind the grill, that would work.

can you send me a link to this "gotts mod" im new to the f150 scene i had a 98 grand prix gt prior to this and was basically gonna copy my design i used on that and apply it to the truck cause it performed rather well. im just really looking for the cheapest intake out there for a bit better throttle response and a little boost in mpg's. my other car is a trans am so i hate the feeling of putting my foot half way thru the floor to get the damn thing to move. the trans am i touch the gas and i spin the tires lol
If you wanna make your own intake do it. Im gonna, just differ your plans a bit. Im doing a pipe with a 90 in it that runs from the throttle body to the stock air filter housing. That right there should be worth something because no matter whether you do the gotts mod or not that inside tube is still rippled and air flows through flush smooth objects better then rippled ones. Makes sense to me so thats what im gonna try.

i understand its commonly used but i dont see the gotts mod being superior to just a short ram intake. one is smooth piping>rippled stock piping. two is the distance from the filter to the throttle body is shorter. three you can suck in a bigger volume of air. plus the whole cold air vs. hot air debate isnt that big of a deal. whats that equate to? 1 whp? the only person that will notice that is whoever reads the dyno sheet.
In that case. You'll see worse perfomance than the gotts mod. The engine only needs so much air. The gotts mod gives it all the air it cold ever want. And keeps it cold. What you want to do gives it all the air it wants as well, but keeps it hot and dirty. In the end, do what you want. But I'm 99.9% the gotts mod will be better for you.
If you're worried about rippled piping, replace that with smooth walled rubber hose. Then you're good to go.
