Default Brutal hard shift from first to second

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

My 1997 4x4 has been shifting really hard between first and second. It is an automatic, 20 bolt tranny, with 151k on it. It feels like I'm being rear ended when it's shifting. It rattles my toolbox it's so hard. The only time the shifting seems almost normal is when I put the pedal to the floor, and then it has a rather drawn out shift, or it outright refuses to leave first until I let off the gas.

I put brand new mercon fluid in it, new filter, and a bottle of Lucas tranny fix in her- nothing helped.

I've also done the battery disconnect to try and have the computer relearn my driving, and that hasn't helped either.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I had the same issue except mine was going from 2nd to 3rd. Would not shift until I let off the gas. Eventually it would not shift to 3rd at all. 2500 dollars later and I have a fresh rebuilt tranny. Sucks but had to be done.

Ok, so I took it to AAMCO for a full diagnostic. They checked it and said it was the "1st to 2nd clutch pack" and that I needed a full rebuild (quoted $2700- yikes) Has anyone heard of this failure on the E4OD? I want to take it for a second opinion, but am hoping someone else has heard this only to find it was something less expensive than half the value of the truck!

Deez, please, search out a good local independent transmission shop. Or even check with local Ford dealer. Unless somebody here knows more about Aamco than me.

AAMCO is junk. But it is very possible the steels have welded them selves to the drum. It may be time for a rebuild.

I dont recommend going there. I'm getting a fully rebuilt trans for $1000 from a trans shop.

Where are you picking that up? I'm struggling to find any refurbished tranny under 1500. I also took it to another local shop, and they gave me the same answer.
