Default best 5.4 mod for mileage

Hey guys i am new to the forum. I just picked up a 2001 crew last week with 100k on the clock. Truck has mods listed in sig. Previous owner said he was averaging 15-17 hwy. I only drive 12 miles one way to work and back and have yet to break 13.8 mpg going 60mph. I was kinda bumming cause i just sold my 01 F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke and i consistently got 15.8-16 with that truck. This is my 9th ford truck and 3rd 5.4L. I have never gotten this bad of mileage with a 5.4 before. I owned one other 01 s-cab off road and then i had an 05 s-cab 4x4. Neither of those 2 got this bad of mileage. I also drive really easy. I did notice that my drivers side head gasket is weaping oil but i'm not sure if that has much to do with it. Truck runs 100% perfect. So after all this, is there anything else i can do to get more mpg's out of this one?

I'm getting around 16 mpg. The difference in our trucks is I have 3.73 gears and a Superchips tuner. My tuner is set on 93 octane performance which means I run premium fuel. Premium fuel burns slower and with the advanced timing of my engine I still save 2-3 bucks on a fill up in mileage over regular fuel. Before the tuner I was getting about the same as you.

Are you happy with the super chip tuner? I am more familiar with the diesel tuners and i don't know whats good as far as gassers go. I always looked for custom tunes for my diesel.

start with the basics pull a couple of plugs an check the gap gap on the 5.4 is 0.52-0.56.. being a diesel guy didn't know if u new gassers use spark plugs (lol).... Also fuel and air are im sure u know will effect your economy... try runnin yr tires at 35 psi if yr not already most people seem to run them at 32 psi, fords recommendation is 35 psi for that truck
those r some basics im sure u might be aware already but thought i would throw them by u..
good luck

LOL, yeah i new about the spark plugs. I have owned MANY ford trucks, mostly gassers. The plugs were replaced at about 60k so they should be good for a little while. I did check my tires the other day and they were already at 35psi. I have checked out PHP as far as tunes go. They have a great reputation in the diesel world along with tony wildman tunes. What are undrive pulleys, never heard of them before. Also do the e-fans pull as much cfm as the stockers do? i Know the ones made for the 7.3's wouldn't pull as much air and the engines would run hotter when towing heavy. I will not be towing super heavy with this truck. Just my 18ft boat.

i know that the e-fans take a load off of the truck because of the belt drive fan and the undrive pulleys but the kit you buy from troyer performance are awesome and have a good name and it shouldnt cause your truck to run hot pulling any thing and underdrive pulleys i think are a little bigger and everything doesnt have to work as hard to keep up and as long as you got a good exhaust and intake and custom tunes with the fans and pulleys it should be real peppy lol and should add a few more mpgs

even if you get a tuner exhaust intake etc you will have to get it custom tuned to actually notice anything and it will take forever to get your money back on the investments on your truck
