Should i even attempt to replace this? or just leave it alone since its so rusted?

Replacing means you are going to remove this one and put on another one... how are you going to do that if you don't know what it is?

yes, replace with new. and thats why i was hoping someone knew what it was. is it the knock sensor?

Yes. Hard to tell, but I think you in the block cavity valley. Must be a 4.6L

this is in the valley of the engine.

1999 f150 4.6l it has a harness running to the back of the passenger side engine.

i just bought the truck and i ripped apart the intake manifold to get to the heater hose leak, i want to replace anything under the intake i can so i dont have to do this job again down the road and as you can see the guy left the leak for so long it has gotten pretty bad in the valley so im worried this sensor could be damaged

OK, now I've put two and two together. You've started another thread.... this is by the intake pipe... and yes, I believe that is a knock sensor.

I thought we were looking at the transmission tunnel for some reason.
