Default Another kind of key idea...

Some punk stole one of my keys this past summer. The key they took was the type with the buttons on it. Now I have 1 and one fob.
I am left with the no buttons key.
I want to ask if anyone (Or hears of anyone... Don't tell the world that you can start your truck with a flat screwdriver!) has hacked there key and taken out the transponder and installed it into the receiver inside the column.
I found a video on YouTube on how to do this.
Here:
Have you heard of anyone having any luck with this mod? I know it works for SAAB's. (There keys are $527+ tax!)
I now need to get another key or two. I'm thinking of getting this type from Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181329346188
That way I can have 2 keys with buttons and one spare plain key.
Advice?

Hey now, I can start the truck with a Phillips head screwdriver, if I can get to the solenoid under to hood

Anyways, problem here is getting the fob to work won't be hard, but you'll need a key that's programmed, like the one you use to start the truck, then you can program the keyfob.

The key on the other hand, will need to be programmed into the PATS system, and that won't be cheap. That will usually run you anywhere between $200 and $500 depending on who does it. In the long run, you'll be better off getting a new ignition with 4-5 spare keys and keyfobs with them all programmed.

I believe this information is right, call your local dealer or shop to confirm.

Thanks!
I know what I'm doing now.
There isin't any link between the ignition cylinder reader and the computer in the PATS system is there? (On my SAAB there is. Everything is married to everything else on it.)
I'm hoping for Plug and Play.

I couldn't get into detail as I own an 01' but I'm sure as long as the right key is in the ignition and PATS sees not problems. Your golden

It shouldn't cost that much to program keys. My shop would charge maybe $80 tops! I have the only IDS in the shop so I would be doing the programming. I would recommend a pats reset with programming your new keys. The stolen key would no longer work then. You could have an interface wired in under the column. Wouldn't need a programmed key then. How they made remote starts work with theft systems in the early days. Programming key fobs is simple. You may want to try and fool the system with only 1 key programmed. Have to be real fast with switching the keys but can work. Stolen key would still work then too.

How do you do that? Are you saying you can program a second key if you just have one?

Yes, you have to be real quick. Install first key to on. Take out of ignition and back in again. To on. Making the system think you have two different already programmed keys. Then install the unprogrammed key to run. 5 seconds max for all three key cycles. Theft light should go out. If not. It's not programmed. If the original key lights the theft light up now. Wait, it's in lockout mode. If you have one of the original "master" key's. This should work. If you have an already programmed key, it may not. If the new key won't program, then you'll have to find someone you can program keys. Original will still work regardless.

I just came across this on YouTube.
Do you need the program to get into the pats system?
I would introduce a different key at # 3 and # 4.
So as outlined above by TRD-Toy... You can just do it with out the computer...?

Video shows using an IDS with ford programs. In the owners manual it states the customer can add a key using 2 already programmed keys. You can fool the system into thinking you have 2 keys but don't.
1. Install programmed key to run
2. Key off.
3. Take key out
4. Reinstall same key to run
5. Key off
6. Take key out
7. Install unprogrammed key to run
Theft light should go out if everything worked. This all has to happen very fast. Get the first key programmed. Try programming other spare keys the same routine. No computer needed.
