The hub doesn't have to be bad for the sensor to be bad.

I've been working on cars as a hobby and for a living for quite a while, and I have only replaced 2 of the sensors you are talking about. One in an early 90's f150 and one in an older explorer. I have replaced SEVERAL wheel speed sensors because here in Michigan the salt makes them corrode fast and not get a good reading off of the disk on the hub. That rear sensor is not the only thing that makes an ABS light come on. Also, I have noticed that if the rear sensor goes bad, then the tranny shift points are screwy because the transmission isn't getting the data it needs so it defaults

Best way is to have it scanned.... My abs light came on and it's a wheel speed sensor front left hub. I had it scanned. It's causing excessive dump bah blah blah lol anyways it thinks my left front wheel is locking up and sliding when it's not and it pushes the brake pedal back up so it was really hard to stop.... Scary ! I unhooked the abs for now untill I get around to fixing it so the light just stays on. But my bearing has play in it so I know I need the whole hub assembly.

I just had mine scanned at Ford. They say it's a "Rear ABS Sensor" that needs replaced. Labor is $140, part is listed by Ford for $40. $20 for tax. I'm assuming i Could get it done pretty cheap somewhere, I don't trust myself yet since this truck is new to me. But I already paid the $85 fee to inspect the light and the rest of the truck, and that's included in the labor fee, so $115 left doesn't seem like a bad deal to know it's done right.
